Why Adult Acne and Teenage Acne Shouldn't Be Treated The Same Way
Written by: Carmen - Founder of Skin Fairy

Adult acne is a completely different conversation to teenage breakouts.

I've personally dealt with it on and off since high school, I can confidently say it’s far more complex than just “clogged pores.”

Across my two skin clinics here in Perth, I see this every day. Women and men in their late 20s, 30s and 40s who are doing everything “right” but are still breaking out.

The truth is, adult acne is often driven by internal factors like hormones, stress, gut health and inflammation, not just surface oil or bacteria. This is why so many over-the-counter products, harsh peels and quick-fix treatments fail long term, as they strip and suppress the skin without addressing the underlying dysfunction.

What makes enzyme therapy (particularly the DMK approach), so different is that it works with the skin’s natural functions rather than against them. Instead of attacking the acne, it focuses on restoring cellular activity, strengthening the skin barrier, improving oxygenation, and encouraging proper lymphatic drainage. This is key, because adult acne-prone skin is often impaired, inflamed, and lacking true function, not just “dirty” or congested.

Enzyme therapy helps rebuild that function from within, which is why results are not only more consistent but longer lasting. It’s not an overnight fix, and it shouldn’t be, as real skin revision takes time, commitment, and a customised approach. But when the skin starts functioning the way it’s meant to, breakouts reduce, healing improves and the cycle of constant flare-ups finally starts to break.

If you are struggling with acne as an adult, the Fairies would love to help you with a customised treatment plan. You can book an initial consult at either our Claremont or Mount Hawthorn skin clinics here.
